Over the last decade, comedy shows especially Standup comedy has gained a lot of popularity. It attracts people from several walks of life and professions and is particularly popular in the metro cities.
It is a culture which in a way funds its roots from days of Charlie Chaplin, a mime where you make a joke on yourself or a satire on the world around. It can be a deep dive on a particular issue or a general mockery on the state of affairs. The idea is to look at the same things with a new lens, particularly a funny one. Phrases, sentences or references are made to which are so simple in context which touch your nerve only by using the funny bones of the comedian. There are various styles of comedy anecdotal, observational, tonality, sketch, which uses different kinds of references and patterns to develop a context and story line. The fact that it is so simple and is based on real life experiences, a good comedian has the potential of reaching out to the general public who can appreciate such comedy. Ii you look at countries like India where Standup comedies have gained momentum especially in the last decade, they are popular particularly in the metro cities. There are broadly two reasons for that- the people in the metros have a wide variety of professions and subsequent lifestyle options, which gives a bigger palette to the comedian to choose from. He may connect professions, lifestyles and related life changes to develop his humour. The second reason is when the comedian remarks on the their professions or lifestyles and choices, the people in the metros have the maturity, understanding and acceptance of it and do not treat it as an offence. Discussions on identities, social issues and household problems are not frowned upon but are talked about on a lighter note at such comedy shows. This also enhances their appeal amongst the normal public. Dating and Relationships, sex, education, corporate life, kids are some of the popular themes of comedy. I thought to myself one day, why do people enjoy these shows. Today, life in the metros has become busy and challenging. There are multiple issue that people have to cope up with, pressures of turnovers, deadlines, drive to be better and manage to survive. In this cut-throat competition you often do not have time for self love, introspection and developing your interests besides work. So when you attend shows where in a room full of victims the comedian wishes to roast the HR of the company, or complain about the traffic or any other related issue, it strikes a chord with everyone in the room. When you realise you are not the only one in the room with that pain but when it is shared with many others, you feel a part of the group and you laugh your heart out. It relaxes your neurons, boosts your confidence and you have better strength to either fight the world or ignore what is necessary. When you can learn to laugh at a problem, you can handle it much better without pressure. Hence, I truly feel we should all support the Standup comedians for our own wellbeing. We don’t additionally need to laugh forcefully during morning walks. But instead if it becomes a part of the HR activities on Friday, attrition rate in the offices can reduce remarkably and it can create a healthy atmosphere.
